Top Commentators Plugin
WordPress June 17th, 2007I want to give something back to those that take the time to comment by giving you a little reward. I’ve decided to implement a useful little plugin that rewards my top commentators. The plugin is called “Show Top Commentators,” but of course. It’s a nifty little plugin that enables you to show the top commentators on the front page of your blog along with a “dofollow” link to their site. This will enable “Top Contributors” to get their links right on the front page of Business Blogger and it enables me to give a little link love to you.
The plugin has a couple of options that I made use of. The first option was one that lets you limit the number of top commentators to list on your page. I’ve decided to put the limit at five commentators for the time being. For beginners, I had reservations about driving traffic away from the blog but on the other hand I want to help those that help me. I think a top five is fair for now, I may decide to change that at a later date. The second option I chose to use was the one that filters comments from users. This lets you filter comments from yourself or anyone else, so I filtered myself of course.
So here it is, the first set of top commentators:
Robert - Sorry, I didn’t get your URL.
This plugin has been around for a while and I have run across a few blogs that use it. I think it’s a nice plugin and I hope you like it. I know that I’ve enjoyed your comments, opinions and insight thus far.

Nice to see someone openly acknowledge the way the web actually works (meritorious linking). Had Google not started the overt commercialization of linking, you might not have needed to be so obvious about it.

Thanks for the link, Chris. I’ll be sure to let you know how much traffic i’m getting from here. That way I guess you will know if it’s taking much traffic away. So far it’s at 1 according to Awstats.
cheers

This is true, John. Linking is the key.

No problem Billy, thanks for participating in the conversation. You’re already taking my visitors I see. ;)
Have a great day!

omg, thanks for the link man, I really appreciated. :)
I use the same plugin on my site, but I removed the URL because sometimes the people use adult URL´s (just for fun) and is not good.
Anyways, I like your site, your design and the good attitude to spread the “love” over the DOFOLLOW links.
Congrats!

Thanks for the link, Chris! I was holding off on commenting, because I didn’t want to be seen as gratuitously increasing my own “comment count.” But I’m genuinely pleased, and hope that we all benefit. A rising tide lifts all boats.

Your welcome, Sabo.
No problem, Angie.
Thank you both for visiting and commenting when it counts.

Hi Chris. I just found your site but after looking around for awhile I subcribed to your feed.
I’m going to try the plugin you suggested and see how it works on my site. I agree that rewarding those who comments is definitely worth the link. Now all I need is more comments ;-)

Thanks, Kayleigh. It’s a good way to reward your top commentators if you so choose.

[…] So, apologies go out to those that actually provided valuable comments. I may decide to link to those in future posts instead of using the front page links. Anyhow, that’s my rant for the day, goodbye to the top commentators plugin. […]

Well I dont see any such plugin being used on your blog … I can see only recent posts, recent comments and meta widgets being used

plus the comments also have rel attribute as “external nofollow” I wonder what kind of link love is that for commentators
Moreover I wonder why I am even taking pain to post 2 comments

This post is almost nine months old, there is a trackback post here, number thirteen explaining why I have stopped using the plugin. Basically the plugin is great but I just don’t have the time to keep up with the comments and the spam attacks I was under when I had it installed.
I don’t do nofollow on post comments as it has several drawbacks.
