Search Engine Wars
SEO September 12th, 2008
Everyone knows that Google is at the top of its game right now. Without a doubt they provide the most relevant content and generally just a nice overall user experience. What is it that Google does that makes them so much better than the other search engines? Google knows the search engine game.
Yahoo usually provides a nice user experience and they are getting much better with their results as of late. The laggard tends to be Microsoft, maybe that’s why they were trying to purchase Yahoo. It would be much easier for them to throw a big wad of cash at the problem then it would for them to build from the ground up.
The solution that I think would work for Microsoft is to get some search people that know the industry, pay them well and pick their brains. Guys like John Andrews joke about going to work for Google but I honestly think that a company like Microsoft would benefit greatly from a relationship like this. Microsoft could without a doubt afford to do something like this. The question is, are they serious about their search engine? They are behind but with the right help they could make a quick impact on the search engine wars.

Chris: Good job. Microsoft is indeed behind in search, but when they make a play I believe that it is gong to be very strong. They are battling on many fronts including the PC, Vista, and others and their basic business model is under attack. My guess is that there is a question of priorities and search is on the list, but it is not at the top. I post at www.cxothoughts.com and on Zimbio at “Inside the CXO Mind”.

I think they need to make a move fast, if they really want to be part of the Search engine wars.
As of today, one barely find people searching in MSN.

People often forget Microsoft has tons of great people working for them. The problem is likely not getting more great people. It is likely much more structural part of how they manage that is causing them problems. They have more than enough money to buy whatever they need but their search results continue to be poor.

I think they are more interested in bringing together all their platforms at the moment. Also given their experience with IE maybe they dont want a Search Engine war on their hands.

Although google is considered the best, yahoo can offer much too. Being user-friendly is the main point in the search for the best search engine.
