Blog Communities - We Want You
Blogging June 19th, 2007
Well, it’s official. I finally got around to joining the “major” blog communities out there. When I say major I mean the major networks that I see the most bloggers using. The two that come to mind are MyBlogLog and BumpZee. Honestly I don’t have a real great feel for either of these networks as of yet so I can’t give you a flawless rundown but I will give you what I do have.
I can tell you that even though BlogCatalog advertises themselves as a blog directory they seem to function as more of a community just like MyBlogLog and BumpZee. So far I seem to enjoy BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog for their ease of navigation and joining communities. This is a huge factor for me in making these sites more appealing. Bumpzee is bringing up the rear because I find it to be the toughest to navigate. Bumpzee just seems to lack that “it factor” to keep me coming back. Although Bumpzee may not be the best for me, it does have some good communities that you might enjoy connecting with.
As of right now I’m having a debate with myself over widgets. Should I add widgets from any of these sites to my blog? Which widgets do I choose? This is a tough decision because I will be giving away precious space for these widgets. I can’t trash up my front page with a huge number of widgets at this point in the game, so someone has to be left out. Who will it be?
On the other hand these widgets might actually provide some relevant traffic for my blog. For instance I know that BlogCatalog offers you a little more pull on their site by giving you an “increase in your blogrank by ten points” if you use their neighborhood widget. I am going to try and spend more time on these networks to see which one works the best for me. I’m sure you will see at least one widget on the sidebar soon. Time to spread the love.

In my experience most people belong to both BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog, so even if you put both you end up getting two pictures of the same person on both. Personally I like BlogCatalog, I get a lot of traffic and have made contacts through this community, so that is why I picked BlogCatalog for mine.
Good luck with your choice!

Thanks Danielle, I am leaning the same way as of right now.

Interesting, maybe you could try it for a while and report to us which works best?

Yes, a taste test for blogging community widgets. That would interest me as well.

There are many of these Web 2.0 social networks running its almost hard to keep track of them all. MyBlogLog is good and serves its purpose for as a Blog Log/Directory. I have never used Blog Catalog and will take a look at it.
For me MySpace is too noisy and doesn’t offer enough useful add-ons, come to think of it the entire architecture leaves a lot to be desired and navigation around the entire portal seems to be at a all time low.
myJournal.com is coming soon, this promises to fill in all the gaps and work with their users. Lots of interesting things planned.

I agree Vinnie, there are just so many out there to choose from so I try to focus on the top tier. MySpace can be noisy but if you monitor your friends list closely it can still be used to your advantage.
Thanks for the the MyJournal URL, I had not heard of it yet. I always enjoy new tools.

I have been with BumpZee practically from the very beginning. I actually prefer BumpZee over any other online community, it was started by people who are affiliate marketers and therefor I for once felt welcomed there. Now there are communities on BumpZee just for about any topic. In fact you can create your own community.
BumpZee has plenty of Google juice flowing around as well, and it shares it too- you can choose not to attribute “nofollow” to the links to your blog.

I tried using them last night and the website speed was killing me. Other than that problem it seems to have some good stuff going for it.

I haven’t joined BumpZee yet - I am registered at BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog; that’s enough for now!

I do get the occasional add request over there, mind you I’m not “active” there. Quite a bit of it has been spammy type blogs though. It could be that my experience is unique, or not.
